The TBR Pile

Are you a reader? A book lover? Appreciator of literature?

If so, there’s a good chance you have an ongoing to-be-read pile. You’ll never see the end of this pile. The pile is eternal. If you read a book from the said pile then another book must take its place. I don’t make the rules, but there they are.

Now, why do we create these endless to-be-read piles?

Is it the case that we horde books like home gym equipment? Bought with the best intentions but destined to gather dust until we quietly shuffle them into a charity bag. No, I don’t believe that’s the case. Readers don’t buy books out of obligation or a ‘suppose I should do this’ mindset – they buy them out of passion.

The other day, while doing online research to promote my book, I stumbled upon a list of book quotes on the Penguin Random House website. I forgot what I was looking for. Several titles were quickly added to my Amazon wish list.

That’s how it happens. A title, a book cover or a quote catches your eye and suddenly you need to know more. You’re falling down the rabbit hole before you know what’s happening. And yes, you do want to read those books.

The to-be-read pile is not a testament to the reader’s procrastination, but too much passion for books. If we all had more time, money and endless personal libraries we would read those books in the to-be-read pile, and more would replace them.

It’s the great circle of reading, and you have a role in it. Go out and fill your to-be-read piles!

Happy reading!
