There have never been so many ways to read a book. Paperback, hardback, ebook – you’re spoilt for choice. Audiobooks are the new kid on the block but by all accounts are an increasingly popular way to digest books. I must confess, I’ve never tried an audiobook. It took me a while to give ebooks a chance and maybe one day I’ll turn to ebooks but for now, I’ll stick to reading.
Having said that, I’m well aware some people love audiobooks. There are benefits to them as well. As far as I can see these are the top reasons to give them a chance.
- Portable – Like an ebook you can take it anywhere. Listen through your phone, tablet, or laptop. You can have it playing while you’re doing work in the house or before you go to sleep at night. There are plenty of possibilities and it’s a great way to get through books if you’re not a huge fan of reading.
- Easy on the eyes – Let’s face it, we all spend too much time staring at screens. Even if you read traditional print books your eyes will eventually get tired. This is probably the reason that would convince me to give them a chance. After a day of writing, digital art and scrolling pointlessly through my phone my eyes are exhausted. Audiobooks can be a great way to escape into a book without straining your eyes. Let your ears do the reading for once.
- Relaxing – If you’ve ever read a book or article about mindfulness you’ve probably seen meditation mentioned. There are plenty of popular meditation apps out there, and they’re popular because people find them relaxing. I’m not saying audiobooks have the same vibe as meditation but much like listening to music they can provide a stress-free means of escape. Get comfy, settle in, and let the audiobook take you away.
If any of these reasons appeal to you it might be time to dive into audiobooks, and I have the perfect place to start. Exclusive to Google Play you can get Drifting in a Dream as an audiobook. Yes, you read that right – it’s an AUDIOBOOK!!!
Rest assured, you will not be subjected to my voice for this reading of Drifting in a Dream, and unfortunately Stephen Fry was busy. Your reader will be Archie G. Oogle.
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Archie is one of several voices I tried when converting my book into an auto narrated audiobook for Google play. I promise he’s not as robotic as you think. As much as I’d love to have it narrated by a real person, people are expensive and robots are cheap. Nevertheless, I think it sounds pretty great. You can listen to a free sample to see what you think, and if you do take the plunge into audiobooks you can get Drifting in a Dream for £3.99* in May 2022 with code R86AXJ5SW9R61 exclusively at Google Play.
Check it out here, and let me know what you think!
