When it comes to the fantasy genre, the possibilities are endless. This is a genre that literally covers everything from hobbits to vampires and magic, all under the umbrella of fantasy. If you were to pick up two fantasy books at random there’s every chance they’d be set in different time periods, alternative worlds and starring all manner of creatures.
The variety keeps the genre fresh and exciting, but what is it about fantasy that makes people return to it so often? You could argue the most consistent theme of fantasy is the supernatural. No matter whether it’s set in the modern-day world like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, or set in a different universe entirely like A Song of Ice and Fire, there is always some element you wouldn’t see walking down the high street. Whether it’s magic, dragons or another force entirely it is the supernatural element that declares a book for the fantasy genre.
Could it be more than that?
As a long-time fan of fantasy, I’ve come to realise it isn’t necessarily the magic systems or mythical creatures that draw me into a book – it’s the characters. I believe the enduring appeal of fantasy comes down to how well the characters connect to the human experience. Take Game of Thrones, for example. The dialogue and characters connect with the reader long before the dragons do. The same could be said for Six of Crows. I’d happily read about Kaz Brekker’s crows arranging a heist at Asda, because I’m connected and invested in the characters.
You might think that means I don’t like the fantasy elements that makeup fantasy books, but that isn’t true. My favourite kind of fantasy is the one with some grounding in the real world. Where you can imagine adventure is only a wardrobe or letter away.
Reading always offers an escape from the real world, but for me, fantasy has always led the way. It’s not an escape into the same world with a different lens – it can be the same world with a secret side to it. A different world or time period.
Fantasy can be anything, and that is why it endures.
